Pavel Romanovich Popovich is a pilot-cosmonaut of the USSR, Major General of Aviation, Candidate of Technical Sciences, the twice Hero of the Soviet Union (1962, 1974). He graduated the Industrial College of Labor Reserves in Magnitogorsk in 1951. At the same time, he studied at the aero club. He was a cadet of the 52nd Air Force Aviation School of Pilots in 1952. He graduated the Central Aviation Instructor Courses for Advanced Training of Air Force officers in 1954. He served in aviation units and was a member of the first cosmonaut squad. He graduated from the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy in 1968. Pavel Romanovich Popovich performed two space flights: on the Vostok-4 spacecraft (August 12-15, 1962), on the Soyuz-14 spacecraft and the Salyut-3 orbital station (July 3-19, 1974) with a total duration of 18 days and 16 hours. He was the director of the Russian Institute of Land and Ecosystem Monitoring since 1991, then worked as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the All-Russian Institute of Agricultural Aerial Geodesic Surveys (now the State Design and Survey Institute of Land and Cadastral Surveys), which compiles the land cadastre of Russia using photographs from space. President of the Yuri Gagarin Charitable Foundation and the Soyuz Fund for Social Support of Veterans of the Armed Forces (1994-2009). Pavel Romanovich Popovich has published 15 books. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin (1962, 1974), Orders of Friendship of Peoples, Red Star, Honor, «For Services to the Fatherland» IV degree, medals.
