Sergey Akimovich Chernovsky was a participant of the Great Patriotic War, the commander of the rifle platoon of the 3rd rifle Battalion of the 29th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 12th Guards Rifle Division, the Hero of the Soviet Union (1945), Guard lieutenant (later Guard colonel). He was born in 1921 in the village of Yurievo, the Tula region. He finished 7 grades and FSU school in Tula, worked as a turner in the city of Plavsk. In February 1942, he was drafted into the Red Army. In January 1943, he completed the junior lieutenant courses and was sent to the front as a platoon commander. During the Great Patriotic War, he fought on the Bryansk and Belorussian fronts. On the night of September 28, 1943, a platoon under the command of S.A. Chernovsky was the first to begin crossing the Dnieper River near the village of Glushets in the Loyevsky district of the Gomel region. Having crossed the Dnieper, the platoon blocked two bunkers and captured the coastal section of the enemy trench, thereby ensuring the crossing to other units. Lieutenant S.A. Chernovsky was shell-shocked in the battle, but remained in the ranks and continued to command the platoon. By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR «On awarding the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union to generals, officers, sergeants and enlisted personnel of the Red Army» dated January 15, 1944, Lieutenant S.A. Chernovsky was awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union for «exemplary performance of combat missions of the command to force the Dnieper River and courage and heroism shown at the same time». For other military actions, Sergey Akimovich was awarded two Orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, the Order of the Red Star, as well as many medals. After the war, S.A. Chernovsky continued his service in the army. In 1946 he completed the officer training courses. Until 1948, he worked as a military commissar of the Kichminsky district of the Kirov region (now the Soviet district of the Kirov region). Since March 1971, Colonel S.A. Chernovsky was in reserve, worked as a safety engineer in the RSU-2.
