Arkhipov

Yuri Mikhailovich Arkhipov was the squad commander of the 1216th Rifle Regiment, a senior sergeant, the Hero of the Soviet Union. He was born on August 10, 1923 in the village of Novonikolskoye, the Tambov district, the Tambov Province (now defunct; the territory of Pokrovo-Marfinsky Village Council of Znamensky district, the Tambov region). He lived in the city of Perovo (now in Moscow) since 1935. In 1938 he finished the 8th grade of the school. In 1938-1941 he worked as a locksmith at the factory of the All-Union Institute of Agricultural Mechanization (VIM). He served as a Red Army soldier in the infantry. He was a participant of the Great Patriotic War: in January-July 1942 he fought on the Western (or Bryansk) front. On July 28, 1942, he was seriously wounded and sent to hospital. From December 1942 he fought as a part of the 18th Rifle Division, in 1943-March 1944 he was the squad leader and platoon commander of the 1216th Rifle Regiment. He fought on the Volkhov (December 1942 – February 1944) and Leningrad (February-March 1944) fronts. He participated in the defence and breakthrough of the siege of Leningrad, the Mginsky and Novgorod-Luga operations, offensive battles in the Pskov direction. On January 21, 1943, August 9, 1943 and February 2, 1944, he was wounded (he was wounded four times in total during the Great Patriotic War). He especially distinguished himself during the breakthrough of the enemy’s deeply echeloned defence south of Pskov. On March 31, 1944, a platoon under his command blocked and captured an enemy bunker, participated in the capture of a strongpoint in the village of Ognyannikovo (the Palkinsky district of the Pskov region), successfully repelled an enemy counterattack. During the fighting, a cannon, several machine guns were destroyed and many enemy soldiers were killed. In this battle, he was severely concussed and sent to hospital. For the courage and heroism shown in the battles with the Nazi invaders, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 24, 1945, Junior Lieutenant Yuri Mikhailovich Arkhipov was awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal. In July-September 1944 he served as the platoon commander of the 538th Rifle Regiment (Leningrad Front). He participated in the Narva and Tallinn operations. In October-December 1944, he served in the 36th Reserve Rifle Division. In December 1944 – January 1945 – the platoon commander of Tallinn Military Infantry School, in January-September 1945 – the platoon commander of the 119th Reserve Rifle Regiment (Omsk city). In September 1945 Senior Sergeant Y.M. Arkhipov was demobilized.
