Arkady Petrovich Mikhailovsky was the Admiral, commander of the nuclear submarine «K-178» of the Northern Fleet, captain of the 1st rank, Hero of the Soviet Union. He was in the Navy since September 1942. He graduated from the preparatory course of the Naval Economic School of the Navy in Moscow in 1943. He was a participant of the Great Patriotic War: as a cadet of the school in February-April 1944 he underwent training practice on the training ship «Shaumyan», in April-May 1944 on the cruiser «Red Caucasus» of the active Black Sea Fleet. He graduated from Higher Naval School named after M.V. Frunze in 1947. After college he was sent to the Pacific Fleet. From April 1947 to December 1949 he was the commander of the warhead-1 submarine «Shch-121», from December 1949 to July 1951 divisional navigator of the 11th division of the submarine, in July-December 1951 – the assistant commander of the submarine «S-137». From July 1962 to December 1963 he was the commander of the submarine «K-178» of the Northern and Pacific Fleets. This submarine, under the command of A.P. Mikhailovsky, from September 14 to September 30, 1963, made an inter–theater transition under the Arctic ice from the Northern Fleet through the Bering Strait to the Pacific Fleet (the commander of the campaign was Captain 1st rank N.K. Ignatov). Also he made several difficult research trips, including three times under the Arctic ice. During his commanding service, A.P. Mikhailovsky made a number of complex research trips on diesel and nuclear submarines to the Atlantic, the Arctic, the Pacific Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea in order to study the World Ocean and its resources, ensure the launch of the first artificial Earth satellite, maintain peace and strategic parity during the Cold War. He was one of the first to master the use of rocket weapons in practice. He personally supervised the firing of many types of ballistic, cruise and anti-aircraft missile systems in service with the Soviet Navy. In 1983 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces named after K.E. Voroshilov. From March 1985 to October 1988 he was the Head of the Main Department of Navigation and Oceanography of the Ministry of Defence of the USSR. Since December 1988, Admiral A.P. Mikhailovsky was in reserve. He repeatedly led USSR delegations to international conferences and congresses on ocean exploration and maritime safety. He published more than 100 scientific, journalistic and literary works.
