Nikolai Sergeyevich Stroev was a Soviet scientist and statesman. He was a Hero of Socialist Labor twice (1966, 1982). Also he was a winner of the Stalin Prize of the third degree (1949). He was born on January 20, 1912 in Moscow. He graduated from MAI in 1937, started working while still a student. In 1935-1936 he worked at the Design Bureau of N. N. Polikarpov, in 1936-1941 – at TsAGI, in 1941-1966 – at LII, including in 1954-1966 – head of the Institute. In 1952-1964 he taught at the MAI: associate professor, professor. In 1956 he was appointed Chairman of the Methodological Council for Flight tests of the Ministry of Aviation Industry of the USSR. Since 1966, he has been on a responsible job in government agencies. In 1966-1977 he was Deputy Chairman, and in 1977-1987 he was a First Deputy Chairman of the Commission of the Council of Ministers of the USSR on military-industrial issues, at the same time in 1977-1989 he was a Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR. He entered the history of science thanks to his research in the field of high-speed aerodynamics, field research and testing of aviation and rocket technology, space manned vehicles, means of emergency abandonment of aircraft and rescue of the crew of high-speed aircraft. He participated in the development of weightlessness problems and the creation of unmanned target aircraft. He made a great contribution to the development of aviation technology, the development of flight test methods and research of aerodynamic characteristics of supersonic aircraft in full-scale conditions. He was awarded four Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of the Patriotic War II degree, two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the Red Star, medals. Stalin Prize of the third degree (1949) — for the creation of a new method of aerodynamic research.
