Memorial complex “Courage Square”
The memorial complex “Courage Square” was created in Izmailovsky Park in 1968 in memory of the fact that during the Great Patriotic War, it was here, on the territory of the park, that the volunteer Moscow 85th Guards Mortar Regiment “Katyusha” was formed. Katyusha mortars played an important role in the Great Patriotic War: they became one of the world’s first modern multiple launch rocket systems and were designed to destroy enemy manpower and equipment in a large area with massive volleys. Due to the high efficiency of use and simplicity in production, Katyusha was widely used at the front, the systems had a significant impact on the course of hostilities. The main advantage of rocket launchers was the large number of shells that they fired in one salvo. If several RSZO were working on the same area at once, the destructive effect was increased due to the interference of shock waves. In memory of the role played by the “Katyusha” in the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, a memorial was created. Samples of military equipment that have travelled all the way to Berlin are installed on high pedestals on Courage Square, and, of course, the legendary Katyusha and T-34 tank occupy the main place in the open-air exposition. There is also a monument to Izmailovsky Park workers who died during the war, commemorative steles in honor of units that took part in military operations and a commemorative obelisk in honor of partisan detachments. Courage Square is a favorite place for walking, as well as a place where anyone can stop, think about those terrible years and pay tribute to everyone who contributed to the great Victory.
