Vladimir Alexandrovich Magnitsky was a Soviet geophysicist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Also, he was the founder of the Soviet School of Physics of the Earth’s Interior. Vladimir Magnitsky was born on June 12, 1915 in Penza. He laid the foundations of the national school of physics of the Earth’s interior, analyzed the results of various directions from common positions and new physical methods in the study of the internal structure of the Earth. To determine the temperature distribution in the bowels of the Earth, he proposed using the method of reference points, and when studying the processes of formation of mineral deposits, the theory of zone melting; when analyzing the composition of the lower mantle, he proposed a hypothesis about the decomposition of matter into oxides. He introduced methods based on the use of equations of state of matter at high pressures; gave a quantitative explanation of the properties of the transition layer of the mantle based on equations of state with phase transitions; put on a physical and mathematical basis the study of the mechanisms of formation of platform structures and modern movements; gave explanations for changes in seismic phenomena in depth based on the rheological properties of matter. Under the leadership of Vladimir Alexandrovich Magnitsky the internal structure and evolution of the Earth and the planets of the Solar System are being investigated, the global thermal regime of the Earth is being investigated, physicomechanical models of the lithosphere, models of convective processes in the mantle are being developed, the mechanisms of modern movements of the Earth’s crust are being studied. He was awarded the Orders of the October Revolution, “For Services to the Fatherland” of the IV degree, medals “For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945”, “For Labor Valor”, the O. Y. Schmidt Prize (1971) – for the monograph “Internal Structure and Physics of the Earth”, the Demidov Prize.
