Vladimir Dmitrievich Timakov was a Soviet microbiologist and epidemiologist, founder of the scientific school of microbiologists and geneticists, Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Hero of Socialist Labor. In 1924 he entered the Medical faculty of Tomsk University, received a doctor’s degree, then entered a graduate school. In 1941 he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences on the topic “Milk typhoid and paratyphoid vaccines”. During the Great Patriotic War, V.D. Timakov was appointed as the People’s Commissar of Health of the Turkmen SSR. Under his leadership, an outbreak of acute intestinal infections among the evacuated population and the wounded was eliminated in Krasnovodsk. The Turkmen Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology produced 11 million bacterial preparations, 6 million doses of smallpox detritus, 20 types of vaccines and serums for the front and rear. In 1945 V.D. Timakov accepted the offer of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences and headed the Academic Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow (now the N.F. Gamalei Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology). From 1949 until the end of his life, V.D. Timakov was the head of the Department of Microbiology of the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov and at the same time the department of the Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after N.F. Gamalei. V.D. Timakov published more than 300 scientific papers, including 7 monographs, textbooks on microbiology. He summarized the experience of anti-epidemic practice, put forward a number of principles for the elimination of infections. His main scientific works were devoted to the study of the problem of variability and genetics of microbes, bacteriophagy – forms of bacteria, mycoplasmatology, epidemiology and laboratory diagnostics of infectious diseases, immunology of vaccine effectiveness. For about 40 years, V.D.Timakov taught microbiology to students. He was the initiator of the creation of the Faculty of Medicine and Biology at the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute for the training of biophysicists, biochemists, bio-cybernetics, he took part in the creation of the Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated July 21, 1975, for outstanding achievements in the development of medical science, training of scientific personnel and in connection with the seventieth anniversary of his birth, Academician Vladimir Dmitrievich Timakov was awarded the title of the Hero of Socialist Labor with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Hammer and Sickle gold medal. He lived and worked in the hero city of Moscow. He was awarded 3 Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, 2 Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, medals.
