Vladimir Sergeevich Semenikhin was the General Designer of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor of the Research Institute of Automatic Equipment of the Ministry of Radio Industry of the USSR, Head of the Department of Automated Control Systems of the Moscow Institute of Radio Electronics and Automation, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He was born on January 27 (February 9), 1918 in Sumy, the Kharkov province, now it is the Sumy region of Ukraine. In 1941 he graduated from Moscow Power Engineering Institute (specialty “mathematics and telemechanics”). At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, he was sent to the Urals, where he worked as an engineer, senior foreman, shop foreman, chief designer at plant No. 217 of the People’s Commissariat of Armament of the USSR in the city of Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg). He participated in the development of manufacturing technology and in the creation of new models of aviation cannon-machine gun and bomber sights. Since 1946 he was the Senior engineer of the Technical Department of the Ministry of Armament of the USSR. Since 1948 he was the Head of the workshop, and since 1950 he was the Head of the special design bureau – the Chief designer of the Zagorsk Electromechanical Plant No. 569 of the USSR Ministry of Armament in Zagorsk (now it is Sergiev Posad), the Moscow region. There, under his leadership, the first Soviet automated control system (ACS) was created for the country’s Air Defence Forces. He achieved the transformation of the Institute into the main scientific center of the USSR in the field of creating automated systems for the control of troops. He made a great contribution to the creation of Soviet computer technology. Under his leadership, more than 20 samples of new military computing equipment were created and put into service. In 1971-1974 he was the Deputy Minister of Radio Industry of the USSR and scientific director of the Research Institute of Automatic Equipment. In 1974 he returned to the post of the general designer of the Research Institute of Automatic Equipment, and in September of the same year he was appointed as the general designer of large special-purpose automated control systems for the Armed Forces and the national economy. Under his leadership a unique unified automated control system of all the Armed Forces of the USSR was created. In fact, he was one of the leading creators of a new branch of domestic science and technology, as well as the domestic school of automation of the management process of heterogeneous structures. For outstanding achievements in the creation of new samples of special equipment, by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (“closed”) dated January 27, 1981, Academician Vladimir Sergeevich Semenikhin was awarded the title of the Hero of Socialist Labor with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Hammer and Sickle gold medal. He was the author of about 200 scientific papers and inventions. He was an Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1972), corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences since 1968, Doctor of Technical Sciences (1963), Professor (1965), Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of 10-11 convocations (1979-1989), member of the Presidium of the Higher Attestation Commission of the USSR, member of the Board of the Ministry of Radio Industry of the USSR. He was awarded 3 Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, 2 Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the Badge of Honor and medals.
