Ustinov
1917-1985
Ivan Makarovich Ustinov was a commander, Guard major, the Hero of the Soviet Union. He was born on September 15, 1917 at the Taiga station in the Kemerovo region in the family of an employee. He was educated at Kemerovo Construction College. He worked as a director of a department store in the city of Petropavlovsk, the North Kazakhstan region. In 1938 he was drafted into the Red Army. He was a participant in the fighting on Khalkhin-Gol in 1939. He was a member of the CPSU since 1940 and then a participant of the Great Patriotic War since June 28, 1941. He fought on the Western Front, as a part of the 479th Rifle Regiment of the 222nd Rifle Division, he was the commander of the commandant’s platoon. In December 1941 Senior Sergeant Ustinov was awarded the Order of the Red Star. Later he completed the courses of junior lieutenants, by the autumn of 1942, Senior Lieutenant Ustinov was the deputy commander of the same 479th infantry regiment. In August 1943 he took command of the 774th Rifle Regiment of the same 222nd Rifle Division. For skilful command of the regiment during the breakthrough of the enemy’s defences northwest of the city of Spask-Demensk, and the personal courage and bravery shown at the same time, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner. In 1944 he graduated from M.V. Frunze Military Academy. Returning to the front, he was appointed the commander of the 21st Guards Rifle Regiment of the 5th Guards Rifle Division. He especially distinguished himself during the East Prussian Operation of 1945. Guards Major Ustinov skillfully managed the regiment during the crossing of the Frische Haff Strait on April 25, 1945 and in the battles for the city of Pillau, showed personal courage and bravery. For the courage and heroism shown at the front of the struggle against the Nazi invaders, Guard Major Ustinov Ivan Makarovich was awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal (No. 5469). After the war, he continued to serve in the army. Since 1958 he was in reserve. He lived in the hero city of Moscow. He worked on construction sites in the city, as a foreman on the construction of the first post-war high-rise. Later he became a senior engineer in the Main Department of Trade of the Ministry of Defence of the USSR.
