Ivan Yakovlevich Chugunov was the commander of the tank platoon of the 89th Tank Brigade (1st Tank Corps, 2nd Guards Army, 1st Baltic Front), a Second Lieutenant. He was at the front in the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. He finished the tank school in 1943. He fought in the same crew with his brother Vasily. He distinguished himself during the liberation of Belarus. On June 26, 1944, his platoon, pursuing the enemy, was the first to break into the Vetrino station (Vitebsk region), destroyed 2 self-propelled guns and 2 anti-tank guns and ensured the rapid capture of the station by the battalion. On July 21-22, 1944, when repelling enemy counterattacks near the village of Tatarishki (Vitebsk district), he destroyed 2 self-propelled guns, a gun, and captured an enemy headquarters vehicle with documents. The title of the Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal (No. 5021) was awarded to Junior Lieutenant Ivan Yakovlevich Chugunov on March 24, 1945. After the war, he continued to serve in the army. In 1949 he graduated from the Military Academy of Armored and Mechanized Troops. Major General. He died on February 26, 1978. He was buried in Moscow at the Kuntsevo cemetery (plot 9-3).
