Bogomolov
1939-1984
Semyon Ivanovich Bogomolov was the commander of the pontoon section of the 7th separate motorized pontoon-bridge battalion, a sergeant, the Hero of the Soviet Union. He was in the army since November, 1939. He served as a Red Army soldier in a reserve rifle regiment in the Leningrad Military District and as a squad commander in a pontoon-bridge battalion in the Odessa military district. He was a participant of the Great Patriotic War. He participated in defensive battles in Moldova and in the south of Ukraine, in the Donbass and Rostov defensive and offensive operations, the Kharkov and Stalingrad Battles, the Seva operation, the Battle of Kursk, Belgorod-Kharkov, Poltava-Kremenchug, Kirovograd, Korsun-Shevchenko, Uman-Botoshan, Iasi-Chisinau, Bucharest-Arad, Debrecen, Budapest, Vienna and Prague operations. He especially distinguished himself during the crossing of the Dnieper. On September 27, 1943, in the area of Glinsk-Borodaevsky Island south-east of the city of Kremenchuk (the Poltava region, Ukraine), a group of sappers entrusted to him built a pier and promptly transported tanks to the captured bridgehead on the west bank of the river. For 7 days, almost without sleep and rest, S.I. Bogomolov worked at the ferry, commanding the calculations of the ferry. On October 5, 1943 during an enemy air raid, a tugboat and a ferry were smashed, and S.I. Bogomolov was seriously wounded in the arm. After giving his life belt to the officer, he was the last to leave the ferry and managed to reach the shore with a broken arm. For the courage and heroism shown in the battles with the Nazi invaders, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated December 20, 1943, Sergeant Semyon Ivanovich Bogomolov was awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal. After the war, he served as a foreman of a company of a pontoon-bridge battalion (in the Moscow Military District). In January 1947 Foreman S.I. Bogomolov was demobilized.
