Sergey Petrovich Aleynikov was a navigator of the 16th Guards Long-range Aviation Regiment (1st Guards Long-range Aviation Division, 1st Guards Long-range Aviation Corps, Long-range Aviation), Guards major. He was born on January 31 (February 13), 1909 on the farm Zatishye of the Veynyansky volost of the Mogilev district of the Mogilev province (now a village of the Veynyansky Village Council of the Mogilev district of the Mogilev region, the Republic of Belarus). In 1927 he finished 7 grades of the school. In 1927-1929 he was a laborer at peat processing and a repair worker at the Klimovichi station (now the Mogilev region). He was in the army since June 1929. In 1930 he graduated from Moscow Air Force Special Services School. From 1930 he was a senior meteorologist, in 1931-1933 – the head of the aeronautical service, in 1933-1936 he served as the commander of the detachment of the 2nd Aeronautical Division (in the Leningrad Military District). Since 1936, he served in the Air Force as an assistant to the chief of intelligence of the long–range reconnaissance squadron (in the Leningrad Military District), in 1937-1938 – an operational duty officer of the Leningrad Military District Air Force Directorate. In 1938-1940 he was a navigator of the flagship flight and navigator of the flagship squadron of the Leningrad Military District Air Force. He participated in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940 as a navigator of the flagship air squadron of the Leningrad Military District Air Force. He made 15 sorties. In May-December 1940, he served as a navigator of an air squadron of a reconnaissance aviation regiment (in the Leningrad Military District). In July 1941 he graduated from the Poltava Higher School of Navigators of the Air Force. He was a participant of the Great Patriotic War: in August-December 1941 he served as a navigator of the 420-th long-range bombing aviation regiment. Participated in the Moscow Battle. In January 1942 – May 1943 – a navigator of the 748th (from August 1942 – 2nd Guards) long–range aviation regiment, in May 1943 – May 1945 – a navigator of the 16th Guards Long–range Aviation Regiment (from December 1944 – 16th Guards Bomber Aviation regiment). He participated in the Rzhev-Sychev and Velikiye Luki operations, the Battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, Oryol, Smolensk-Roslavl, Vitebsk-Orsha, Minsk, Polotsk, Vilnius, Tallinn, Riga, East Pomeranian, Konigsberg and Berlin operations. On February 14, 1942, his plane was hit by anti-aircraft artillery fire. Pilot I.F. Andreev, with the help of navigator S.P. Aleynikov (who took the second control), managed to drag the burning plane across the front line and make an emergency landing in the field. In total, during the war, he made 236 sorties on the Ep-2 and Il-4 (208 of them at night) to bomb targets behind enemy lines. For the courage and heroism shown in the battles with the Nazi invaders, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated August 19, 1944, Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Petrovich Aleynikov was awarded the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal.
